Cyclone Shakti Live Updates: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced a warning regarding the arrival of cyclone 'Shakti' in certain districts of Maharashtra, predicting a high to moderate cyclone impact from October 5 to 7 Areas including Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg are under a high to moderate alert until October 7.
From October 3 to 5, wind speeds along the North Maharashtra coast are anticipated to be between 45-55 kmph, with gusts potentially reaching 65 kmph. The wind speed could rise based on the cyclone's strength. The sea conditions are currently very rough, and this is expected to continue along the northern Maharashtra coast until October 5.
The IMD forecasts significant rainfall in Maharashtra's interior regions, especially in East Vidarbha and parts of Marathwada, with potential flooding in North Konkan's low-lying areas due to dense cloud formation and moisture infiltration.
The Maharashtra government has directed preparations for cyclone 'Shakti'. District administrations are advised to activate disaster management systems, develop evacuation plans for coastal and low-lying residents, issue public advisories, discourage sea travel, and ensure safety during heavy rains, according to reports by ANI.
Cyclones in the north Indian Ocean are named sequentially by the IMD using a list contributed by 13 countries. The current system has been named Shakhti (with an ‘h’), proposed by Sri Lanka, and will be used only once the storm reaches cyclonic strength of 34 knots (62 km/h).
Earlier in May 2025, social media created panic over a supposed Bay of Bengal “Cyclone Shakti," which the IMD clarified was only an upper-air circulation, not a surface cyclone. This time, however, the system is genuine, and the IMD has officially confirmed it.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of rough sea conditions due to Cyclone Shakti and advised fishermen along the Maharashtra and Gujarat coasts to avoid venturing into the sea. Fishermen are specifically cautioned against entering the Northwest, West Central, East Central, and Northeast Arabian Sea, as well as coastal areas of Gujarat, North Maharashtra, and Pakistan, until October 7.
