Driving licence to be issued to people with low vision and colour blindness: Ministry of Road Transport and Highways

ST CORRESPONDENT

New Delhi: The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on Friday issued a notification amending the motor vehicle rules. The ministry has taken a big decision on driving licenses, which will now benefit people with disabilities. People with low vision as well as colour blindness will also get a driving licence due to these decisions.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued a notification for revision of Form 1 and Form 1A of the Central Motor Vehicle (CMV) Rules, 1989, said the ministry. This will allow citizens with low and medium colour blindness to get a driving licence.

According to the ministry, several steps are being taken to provide transport-based services to the disabled. Previously, they were facing difficulties in getting a driving licence. Now even the colour blind people have been given the necessary instructions to get a driving licence.

After the ministry was informed that the citizens with colour blindness are not issued driving licence. Opinions were sought from medical experts and institutions. Based on their recommendations, low, as well as medium colour blind citizens, are allowed to get licences. Those with severe visual impairment are excluded.

The driver is required to have at least four documents while driving. The driver must have a driving licence. Also, vehicle registration certificate, insurance and PUC should be checked. These documents are likely to be missing. So a Xerox copy can be kept with them. Copies can also be saved on Digilocker or M Parivahan.
