Pune: Though spam calls received by users in India have gone down by 34 per cent states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh are the most spammed states in the country.

According to the latest Truecaller report 52 per cent of the total spam calls received by Indians this year interestingly came from the telecom operators.

Telecom operators made 52 per cent spam calls, followed by telemarketers (34 per cent), scammers (9 per cent) and financial services (5 per cent) according to the Global Spam Trend report. 98.5 per cent of these spam calls came from domestic numbers.

According to the report, India has gone down to ninth rank in terms of a number of spam calls received by users around the world, while Brazil ranks first. Despite a reduction in the number of spam calls received, India still makes it into the top 10 most spammed nations.

Truecaller reported that spam reached its lowest point in April when stringent curfews and lockdowns were implemented amid the COVID-19 outbreak. The total volume of calls also gone down during this period. However, from this point, reports of scammers taking advantage of the doubt around the crisis arose. In May, spam calls started to gear again and have been increasing on average by 9.7 per cent per month.
