Lifeline back on track: Mumbai's local train service to resume from Friday but not for all

In a joint statement, the Central Railway and the Western Railway stated that an additional 204 special local train services will commute on the Mumbai suburban network

Mumbai: Finally, after a 10-month break amid COVID-19 outbreak, 95 per cent of the total 3,141 Mumbai local train services will resume operation from Friday but all passengers will not be permitted to board Mumbai’s lifeline.

In a joint statement, the Central Railway and the Western Railway stated that an additional 204 special local train services will commute on the Mumbai suburban network from January 29. With this, the total number of services on the suburban network in the Mumbai region will go up to 2,985 from the existing 2,781.

The CR and WR in the joint statement said, “The Central Railway has now decided to increase the suburban services from the existing 1,580 to 1,685 services, and the Western Railway has decided to increase the existing 1,201 suburban services to 1,300 services with effect from Friday.”

The suburban train services in the Mumbai region, were suspended in March 2020 in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and resumed from June.

All commuters not allowed to travel

One must note that the local train services will be available to only those who have been permitted by the Ministry of Railways and state government to travel by the suburban railways during many phases of unlocking. General public have been requested not to crowd the railway stations.

Presently, the suburban services is limited to only select sections of commuters, including women, emergency and essential services employees, lawyers, in view of the COVID-19 outbreak.
