Monsoon update: IMD predicts heavy rain in Mumbai, Thane

Sakal Times News Desk

Mumbai: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday predicted heavy rain for isolated areas in Mumbai and Thane for Monday and Tuesday. The weather department also issued a yellow alert here.

Parts of the state are set to witness a fresh spell of heavy rainfall. The four subdivisions—Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Vidharbha and Konkan and Goa are likely to witness heavy rain, strong surface winds, thunderstorms.

KS Hosalikar, Deputy Director-General, western region, IMD was quoted by Hindustan Times as saying, “Enhanced rain activity is expected between September 19-22 for various areas in Maharashtra due to the likely formation of a low-pressure area over northeast Bay of Bengal by Sunday. Under its impact, lower level westerly winds are likely to strengthen and its associated convergence is expected over the west coast.”

Active monsoon conditions were expected over Konkan and Goa, he added. “This could allow very heavy to extremely heavy rain across isolated areas of south Konkan in the coming days while moderate to heavy rain in isolated areas is expected across interior Maharashtra and parts of north Konkan,” Hosalikar added.

Since the onset of the southwest monsoon season, Maharashtra has jointly received ‘normal’ rainfall of 1072.6 mm—14 per cent more than the long term average of 916 mm from June 1 to September 18.
