On Friday, April 4, 2025, a tragic incident occurred at Sassoon General Hospital in Pune when a 31-year-old man, identified as Dashrath Suresh Medhe, jumped to his death from the hospital's terrace. Medhe, a resident of Rajur in Buldhana district, was admitted to the hospital the previous night due to health complications following excessive alcohol consumption.
Medhe had been struggling with alcohol addiction and had become unwell after consuming liquor on Thursday night. His family members admitted him to Sassoon Hospital for treatment, where he was being cared for in Ward No. 40. On Friday morning, around 7:30 AM, Medhe went to the terrace beside his ward and jumped off, resulting in his death.
The Bundgarden police station has registered an accidental death report, and an investigation is underway. Senior Police Inspector Ravindra Gaikwad stated that preliminary findings suggest the deceased may have committed suicide, although the exact motives are still being determined.
This incident highlights concerns about mental health support and safety measures within hospitals. While Medhe's alcohol addiction was a contributing factor, the ease with which he accessed the terrace raises questions about hospital security and the need for more stringent safety protocols to prevent such tragedies.
The tragic death at Sassoon Hospital underscores the importance of addressing mental health issues and ensuring robust safety measures in healthcare facilities. As authorities investigate this incident, it serves as a reminder of the need for comprehensive support systems for patients struggling with addiction and other mental health challenges.
