Pune: MLA Siddharth Shirole questioned the government on Wednesday in the Legislative Assembly regarding improvements in the rainwater harvesting scheme and steps to be taken for the conservation of old wells in Pune.

Siddharth Shirole, representing the Shivajinagar constituency, brought up the issue of Pune's natural water reserves and conservation efforts.

He stated, "While we are increasing water storage capacity and reducing water wastage, there are several aspects we need to consider. It's not just the outskirts of Pune that are expanding; the population in the city's core areas is also growing.

Many constructions and development projects are underway, impacting the city's groundwater levels. The groundwater level in the city is consistently declining. Even drilling 300 meters deep for borewells does not yield water, indicating a need for urgent attention."

Shirole emphasized the increasing concretization in Pune and highlighted the need for improvements in the existing rainwater harvesting policies.

He stressed the importance of strict implementation, suggesting that rigorous enforcement through the Pune Municipal Corporation's water supply department would effectively address water conservation issues.

Addressing the issue of old wells in Pune, Shirole pointed out the necessity of their protection and conservation, urging the government to take serious measures.
