Pune: MSRTC Discontinues Shivshahi Buses Over Safety Concerns

Shivshahi Buses Discontinued: To repurpose the existing fleet, Shivshahi buses will be converted into standard non-air-conditioned “Lalpari” buses.

Pune, 2nd December 2024: The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has announced the discontinuation of its Shivshahi bus service following rising safety concerns and repeated technical issues.

The decision comes after a series of accidents, including a recent mishap in Gondia that claimed 11 lives.

According to MSRTC officials, technical flaws in the Shivshahi buses had been evident from the outset, but corrective measures were delayed.

Following mounting complaints from drivers and passengers, the MSRTC’s traffic department proposed discontinuing the service. This proposal was approved by the mechanical department, marking the end of the Shivshahi fleet’s run.

To repurpose the existing fleet, Shivshahi buses will be converted into standard non-air-conditioned “Lalpari” buses. Changes include removing the air-conditioning systems, replacing glass windows, modifying seat designs, and addressing operational difficulties faced by drivers.

At present, MSRTC operates 892 Shivshahi buses, with 500 in active passenger service and 392 undergoing repairs in workshops. The phased withdrawal and conversion of these buses will be completed in the coming months.

Persistent issues since the inception of the Shivshahi service included:

  • Poor planning and execution.

  • Contractors’ negligence in maintenance and repairs.

  • Indiscipline among contractor drivers, including arbitrary halts, rude interactions with passengers, and improper conduct with MSRTC staff.
