Mumbai’s highly anticipated Metro Line 3, connecting Colaba, Bandra, and SEEPZ, is nearing its operational launch, with the first phase between Aarey and BKC almost ready.

The only step remaining is to obtain certification from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS). This testing process is currently underway, and once the certification is issued, the first phase of the metro service will be inaugurated. Without this certification, the metro cannot begin commercial operations.

The opposition has raised concerns, accusing the state government of rushing to launch the metro before the assembly elections. However, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde recently confirmed that the first phase between Aarey and BKC would be operational by the end of September.

The second phase of Metro Line 3 is expected to begin service next year. The 33.5 km-long metro line will be a critical addition to Mumbai's public transport system, linking the northern and southern parts of the city.

Significant Public Interest in Metro 3

According to a recent survey conducted by consulting firm Arthur Global, 60% of Mumbai’s population is keen to use Metro Line 3 once it becomes operational.

Of this group, 60% are current users of auto-rickshaws or taxis. The underground metro’s promise of a faster and more efficient travel option has piqued the interest of Mumbaikars, especially those looking to save time during their commutes.

The survey revealed that 63% of auto-rickshaw and taxi commuters are considering switching to the metro for their daily travel. Furthermore, 59% of local train and BEST bus users, as well as 57% of private vehicle (four-wheeler and two-wheeler) commuters, expressed their intention to use Metro Line 3.

Once fully operational, the metro line will connect six major business districts, 30 office areas, 12 prominent educational institutions, 11 major hospitals, and 10 important transit hubs, along with both the domestic and international airports in Mumbai.
