Pune, 19 September 2025: The ambitious Namami Indrayani river rejuvenation plan has received its long-awaited approval from the Maharashtra government’s state-level technical committee, setting the stage for work to begin on one of the region’s most important environmental projects.

The initiative promises cleaner water, stronger flood defences and a greener riverfront for more than 50 lakh residents across Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pune and adjoining rural areas.

The Indrayani River holds deep cultural significance as a sacred site for the Warkari community while also serving as a key water source for the fast-growing Pune Metropolitan Region. Years of pollution, encroachment and unchecked urban growth have left the river in need of urgent restoration. With this clearance, the government can now move forward with full-scale implementation of conservation and infrastructure works.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde have backed the project, which includes river cleaning, sewage treatment, flood-control measures and rainwater management. Polluted water will be diverted to treatment plants, stormwater systems will capture monsoon runoff, and stone embankments will reinforce vulnerable stretches of the river.

Environmental groups have contributed suggestions to the plan, ensuring a balance between urban development and ecological health. The blueprint also proposes riverfront beautification with green belts, a biodiversity park and improved public amenities such as water ATMs, public toilets and chain-link fencing to protect the riverbank.

Officials said persistent efforts to secure financial and technical clearances have finally paid off, giving Namami Indrayani the momentum needed to transform the river into a cleaner, safer and more vibrant natural asset for the entire Pune region.
