COVID-19 Second Wave: These states have announced fresh curbs, extended lockdown; Check details

As India battles a devastating second wave of COVID-19, several states have decided to extend their lockdowns to break the chain of transmission. On Friday, many states including Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka extended the coronavirus-induced lockdown or curfew to curb the spread of the virus.

India reported 2,57,299 new infections and 4,194 deaths in the last 24 hours. The total caseload of the country now stands at 2,62,89,290, of which, 2,95,525 people have succumbed to the virus, while 2,30,70,365 have recovered.

Here is the full list of states that have imposed fresh curbs, extended lockdown:

1. Karnataka

The Karnataka government has extended the state-wide lockdown or restrictions till June 7. The lockdown in the state was announced first on May 10 and is in place till May 24. The government has now decided to extend the lockdown by another two weeks and the lockdown in Karnataka will be in force till 6 am on June 7.

“We had a meeting with senior officials and ministers. We have taken a decision on lockdown. We had strict restrictions till May 24. As per the opinion of experts, we are extending the strict restrictions till June 7 at 6 am,” Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa told the media on Friday.

On Friday, Karnataka reported a record 353 deaths and 32,218 new infections of Coronavirus. The positivity rate has been over 20 per cent in 27 of the 30 districts in the state.

2. Madhya Pradesh

The Madhya Pradesh government on Friday extended the ongoing curfew in Bhopal amid a spike in Covid-19 cases. Lockdown like restrictions will now be in place in the city till 31 May.

Additionally, Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Friday said that the “corona curfew” will be lifted from June 1. "But unlocking should be done in a way that virus doesn't spread again," he said.

On Friday, Madhya Pradesh reported 4,384 new coronavirus cases and 79 fatalities in a span of 24 hours. The recoveries outnumbered the fresh infections, bringing the count of active cases below the 70,000-mark to 67,625.

3. Kerala

The Kerala government has decided to extend the lockdown in the state. The statewide lockdown, which began on May 8, has been extended till May 30, Sunday. Although The triple lockdown in Ernakulam, Thrissur, Thiruvananthapuram will be lifted on the morning of May 22, Saturday. Malappuram district will continue to be under triple lockdown.

While the initial lockdown period was till May 16, the government extended it till May 23, and now, till May 30.

On May 21, Kerala recorded 29,673 new COVID-19 cases. The Test Positivity Rate stands at 23.18 per cent.

4. Goa

The Goa government on Friday extended its ongoing COVID-19 restrictions till May 31. The state government had earlier announced a state-level curfew in the state from May 9 to May 23 in the wake of a steep surge in COVID-19 cases.

Stores selling essential items, grocery shops, liquor stores are permitted to operate from 7 am to 1 pm during the period of the curfew.

The coastal state has registered 1,582 fresh COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours. The positivity rate in the state was 32 per cent on Friday.
