Fuel rates burn hole in pocket: Check new rates of petrol, diesel in Pune, Mumbai and other cities

Akshay Badwe

Pune: Fuel prices were hiked for the eighth consecutive day on Tuesday by Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) pushing petrol and diesel prices to record high.

OMCs increased petrol rate by 26-30 paise (per litre) while diesel price went up by 33-38 paise (per litre) around major cities of the India on Tuesday.

Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan last week had ruled out the possibility of a drop in taxes on fuel prices in order to cut prices. He, however, stated that the Union government has little to do with auto fuels diesel rates and the prices are based on the international crude oil price.

The ruthless hike in fuel prices has been criticised by the opposition parties including Congress that has demanded an instantaneous cut in taxes to ease the problem on the common man. Central and state taxes make up for over 61 per cent of the selling price of petrol while 56 per cent of diesel.

The retail rates vary from state to state depending on the occurrence of local sales tax or VAT and freight charges, to their highest level.
