The Indian Army has entered into an agreement with the United States to acquire Javelin anti-tank missile systems, the U.S. Embassy in India announced on Friday, without revealing the financial details of the deal.

The medium-range guided missile system, jointly produced by Lockheed Martin and RTX, is designed for use against a range of targets, including armoured vehicles, the embassy said.

The missile system is already in service with the U.S. Army and Marine Corps, as well as is in service in more than dozen of other customers, the embassy added.

Sergio Gor, the United States Ambassador to India, shared a post on X, BIG news! India plans to buy the battle-tested Javelin anti-tank system. Just as @secwar highlighted at the May 2026 Shangri-La Dialogue, this is a great step forward in the U.S.-India defense relationship and opens the door to co-production possibilities. The engagement between our two nations is at record high levels!

India is the world's fifth-largest military spender and the second-largest arms importer after Ukraine, according to data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

In October, India and the United States entered into a 10-year defence framework agreement.

Despite a recent downturn in relations between the two countries—marked by Washington’s steep tariffs on Indian exports, its punitive response to New Delhi’s purchase of Russian oil, and its intensified engagement with India’s chief rival Pakistan—their defence partnership has remained intact.
