India, US must ease friction and build predictable tax regime, says Sergio Gor

On Tuesday, US Ambassador Sergio Gor stated that India and the United States, as genuine partners, need to resolve areas of friction and establish stable tax and regulatory systems to enable businesses to prosper.

Speaking to the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce, Gor underscored the need for transparent, trust-based discussions on export controls and strong intellectual property protections, enabling innovators to invest in, develop, and scale their ideas without fear.

The Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC) held its national convention, themed "Redefining the IndiaUS Comprehensive Strategic Partnership."

Gor stated that the US embassy in India ranked first among US embassies worldwide in securing more than USD 20 billion in investments.

He said that when Indian firms invest in the United States, it creates a mutually beneficial outcome, giving them access to one of the world’s most vibrant markets.

"This relationship has unbelievable and incredible potential. To unleash the full power of the economic engine, we must address friction points together as true partners. We need predictable taxation and regulatory frameworks that allow business to thrive," he said.

The US envoy stated that when companies worldwide inform him their intellectual property rights have been violated and they are considering relocating their operations to India, they ask if it is secure, and his reply is an emphatic yes.

"We do trust India," he said, noting that President Donald Trump has placed his confidence in India and has significantly invested in this partnership from the very beginning.

He pointed out that in a little more than twenty years, trade between India and the United States has reached unprecedented levels, surging from USD 20 billion to USD 240 billion in goods and services.

He noted that the twelvefold surge is no coincidence, emphasizing that both nations are committed to raising this volume to USD 500 billion by 2030, a target that underscores the vast and unparalleled potential at stake.

"When India and the US work together, they integrate value chains, accelerate breakthroughs in critical technologies and strengthen supply chain resilience," Gor said.
