More than 20 people were killed in one of Karnataka's most devastating highway accidents in recent years, as a sleeper bus was consumed by flames following a collision on NH-48 Thursday.
At approximately 3 AM near Chitradurga, a bus traveling from Bengaluru to Gokarna crashed into a truck that allegedly crossed the median. The impact caused the sleeper coach to ignite immediately, giving passengers minimal opportunity to flee.
The bus was transporting 29 individuals, comprising both men and women from Gokarna, Kumta, and Shivamogga. According to eyewitnesses, the fire rapidly engulfed the vehicle, leaving the passengers trapped inside.
Throughout the night, emergency services worked tirelessly to recover bodies and transport injured survivors to local hospitals. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sympathies to the victims' families and declared financial aid for those who were deceased and injured.
The tragedy has once again raised serious questions about highway safety, night travel, and enforcement of traffic rules. This is a developing story, more details are awaited.
