Monsoon 2021: India to receive normal monsoon this year

New Delhi: In the grim situation of COVID-19 grappling the entire country, IMD (India Meterological Department) has given a silver lining ahead of the monsoon season.

According to IMD, India will probably see normal monsoon rainfall in 2021 as La Nina or El Nino weather conditions, which impact rain patterns, are likely to be inattentive.

Addressing media briefing on Friday in New Delhi, Ministry of Earth Sciences Secretary M Rajeevan said the Long Period Average (LPA) of the monsoon will be 98 per cent which come in the normal category. The monsoon season begin when the southwest monsoon first hits the southern tip of Kerala usually in the first week of June and goes back from Rajasthan by September. "This is good news for all as the monsoon is expected to be normal this year," Rajeevan said.

The 2021 southwest monsoon starting June is expected to be normal at 98 per cent of the Long Period Average (LPA), said IMD’s forecast that has a model error of plus and minus 5 percent. The LPA of monsoon is 88 centimetres. Rainfall between 96-104 per cent of the LPA is considered a normal rainfall.

IMD stated that its early forecasts show that barring India’s East and Northeast, which includes Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, North-Chhattisgarh, UP and Assam, rainfall in all other regions of India is expected to be normal.

However, experts say that ‘below-normal’ rains in East and North-East parts of the country are not always harmful as the quantum of rains in these parts and also the daily average is higher than other regions of India.

A decent, well-distributed and timely showers will mean another year of profuse farm production in this year, which could have a pouring positive impact and one less reason to worry for an economy fighting another wave of novel COVID-19.

Meanwhile, forecast of a healthy monsoon season cheered India's key standard equity indices which trade in the green during post-afternoon session on Friday. Accordingly, volatility was experimented as rising COVID-19 cases covered any major recovery attempts on the back healthy Q4FY21 results.
