OpenAI’s long-rumored hardware initiative has appeared in a new leak, revealing additional information about what may be the company’s first standalone AI gadget.
Bloomberg reports that the forthcoming device is likely to be a small, screenless smart speaker intended to deliver ChatGPT into households via natural voice-based conversations.
The report suggests the device will feature a circular design similar to a small doughnut and will be approximately the size of a hockey puck.
In contrast to typical smart speakers, the hardware is anticipated to prioritize portability, enabling users to move it effortlessly between rooms.
The device is reportedly being developed in partnership with LoveFrom, the design studio established by former Apple design chief Jony Ive.
It is anticipated to offer a high-end metal build while preserving a clean, minimalist look.
While the product might lack a traditional display, it is reported to incorporate cameras and various sensors that allow it to interpret its environment.
These visual inputs could enable ChatGPT to provide more contextually aware responses.
The device is also expected to feature speaker grilles and microphones for voice interactions, along with built-in lights that signal when it is actively listening to users.
The device is anticipated to draw power from an internal battery, allowing it to be used throughout various parts of the home instead of being confined to a single fixed spot.
The report states that OpenAI envisions the hardware as an AI companion that users can engage with continuously throughout the day.
Much like ChatGPT’s voice mode on mobile phones, the device is expected to enable natural, spoken interactions while progressively learning individual user preferences to deliver increasingly personalised experiences.
It is also said to be designed for flexible use, whether it is resting on a table, sitting on a bedside stand, or being held in the user’s hand.
The device is expected to be priced at about $300, equivalent to roughly Rs 28,000.
The report further suggests that OpenAI may introduce the product sometime in 2027.
With no official confirmation yet from OpenAI about the design but the leak provides an early look at OpenAI's apparent intentions to expand past software and establish a presence in the AI hardware sector.
