Parliament Panel Demands Apology from Zuckerberg over Removal of PM’s Speech, Threatens to Revoke Immunity

On Wednesday, a parliamentary standing committee called on Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to apologize for the removal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech from Facebook.

Apology in 3 Days

In a letter to the secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and IT, a director from the Lok Sabha Secretariat stated that Zuckerberg’s protection and immunity could be revoked if he does not issue an apology within three days.

The Committee regarded as highly serious the removal from Facebook, for a period of 5–6 hours, of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s video addressing students and Gen Z about examination controversies and stringent measures against paper leaks, according to the letter signed by A. Jyothirmayi.

The committee chaired by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey convened a meeting to examine the issue of ‘Social and Digital platforms and their regulation’, shortly after the government summoned Meta’s global team over the temporary restriction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Facebook post.

The Panel has also sought government of India action against head of Google India for investors loosing more than Rs 48 lakh through fraud apps.

The letter notes that the committee, while reviewing the Hyderabad Cyber Police’s action against the Google India head as a co-accused alongside the cyber fraudsters, took into account complaints from victims who claimed to have lost over Rs 48 lakh by investing through fraudulent applications.

The committee believes that the Government of India should take similar action against the head of Google India.
