Veteran Congress leader D Y Patil passes away at 92

Former West Bengal governor and Padmashree awardee remembered for pioneering vast education and healthcare network across India

Former West Bengal governor and senior Congress leader D Y Patil passed away at his home in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, on Tuesday after a long illness, according to family sources. He was 92.

Born on October 22, 1935, Patil held the office of Governor in Bihar, Tripura, and West Bengal. He established the D Y Patil Group, building a vast network of more than 182 educational institutes, seven universities, and leading healthcare facilities throughout India.

The Padmashree recipient is survived by his sons, former minister and Congress leader Satej Patil, Sanjay Patil and Ajinkya Patil. Patil.

Born in Kolhapur, Patil served as an MLA from 1967 to 1978 before shifting his attention to the education sector, where he established D Y Patil University, an institution that provides programmes in medicine, engineering, and various other fields.

Leaders across the political spectrum shared messages of condolence on social media, mourning the death of a towering figure in Indian politics.

Prime Minister Narendra posted on X and said, Shri DY Patil Ji was at the forefront of serving society through philanthropy and education in particular. He always worked to improve the lives of others, especially the poor. Pained by his demise. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this sad hour. Om Shanti.
