Pune: In a significant development for the Panshet region, the government has approved a ₹1 crore fund to revamp the Nilkantheshwar temple at Dawaje (Mulshi Taluka).

The Regional Tourism Development Scheme has provided this funding to beautify the temple premises and ensure essential facilities for visiting tourists. Work on the project is expected to start within a month.

According to Balasaheb Sarje, President of the Nilkantheshwar Devsthan, the fund, sourced from the local MLA’s allocation, will also support ongoing de-addiction efforts, a vital part of the temple’s outreach.

The de-addiction program had previously operated from Donje village, with strong support from the local panchayat and residents. However, devotees from across the country expressed a desire to return the temple’s operations to its original site at Dawje Hill, prompting the shift back to its roots.

The Nilkantheshwar Devsthan was originally founded in 1963 by Shivbhakt Shankarrao Sarje, and after his passing, his son Balasaheb Sarje continued his father's legacy by promoting de-addiction through religious activities.

The tourism department was particularly moved by the temple’s unique approach to social welfare, combining spirituality with the fight against addiction.

This picturesque location, known for its connection to the Shivaji era and its natural beauty, is expected to attract more tourists once the development is complete.

The approved funds will be used for beautification, constructing accommodation for devotees, building protective walls, internal roads, and creating a garden, according to Temple Service Committee Chairman, Radheshyam Sharma.
