Pune: ParamYoga has announced the launch of a Mallakhamb training program in Pune. This unique initiative aims to blend the traditional Indian sport of Mallakhamb with modern fitness techniques, and will be led by Vilas Govind Shrotri, a former National Mallakhamb player renowned for his vast experience and dedication to the sport.

Mallakhamb, which combines acrobatic movements performed on a vertical pole, originates from the Sanskrit words “malla” (wrestler) and “khamb” (pole).

Known for its demanding blend of strength, flexibility, and balance, Mallakhamb has deep roots in Indian culture and gained prominence in the 20th century. It continues to captivate participants worldwide, offering a distinctive way to enhance both physical and mental fitness.

Rashmi Ghatge, Director of ParamYoga, expressed her enthusiasm for the program, stating, “At ParamYoga, we are committed to sharing authentic practices, whether it be Pranayama, Asana, meditation, or other traditional forms.

By introducing Mallakhamb, we aim to expose both children and adults to this unique sport, which, like Asana, requires determination, discipline, and consistency. Both practices help enhance strength, flexibility, agility, and focus. We are confident that Mallakhamb will not only attract more students but also raise awareness of this traditional sport.”

Shrotri said, “I am thrilled to teach Mallakhamb at ParamYoga. Though typically perceived as an outdoor sport, we have adapted it for indoor training, demonstrating that with the right intention, anything is possible. My goal is to train many students at ParamYoga and help them reach competitive levels in Mallakhamb.”

Open to individuals aged 8 years and above, the program is set to begin in September 2024. Classes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM, and on Saturdays from 11:15 AM to 12:15 PM.
