Pimpri: In a major step towards tackling climate change and disaster management, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

This partnership will facilitate the exchange of critical information on changing weather patterns, disaster forecasts, and actionable measures to mitigate their effects.

Advanced Radar System to Be Installed in Nigdi

To strengthen the city’s ability to monitor and respond to weather-related events, an X-Band Doppler Weather Radar Tower will be installed on Durga Devi Hill, Nigdi.

This cutting-edge radar system, with a coverage range of 100 kilometers, will provide real-time data on severe weather events such as heavy rains, storms, and hailstorms. The system will also enable continuous monitoring of Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pune district, the Ghats region, and surrounding areas.

PCMC Commissioner Shekhar Singh and IMD Senior Scientist K.S. Hosalikar recently inspected the designated site for the radar.

The inspection was attended by senior officials from PCMC, including Additional Commissioner Chandrakant Indalkar and Disaster Management Officer Omprakash Bahival, as well as IMD scientists.

The PCMC will provide the necessary land, while the IMD will oversee the radar’s installation and operation.

Enhancing Disaster Management

The collaboration comes at a time when rapid global weather changes are causing an increase in natural and man-made disasters.

Speaking on the occasion, Commissioner Singh stressed the importance of the MoU for exchanging data on atmospheric and weather changes to implement structural measures and ensure the sustainable development of the city. The IMD will regularly supply PCMC with weather updates and actionable insights to aid in disaster preparedness and mitigation.

Critical Tool for Climate Resilience

According to K.S. Hosalikar, the X-Band Doppler Weather Radar will provide valuable real-time data, helping to predict and manage extreme weather events effectively.

The radar system will be instrumental in studying atmospheric conditions that affect Pimpri-Chinchwad, ensuring timely responses to potential disasters.
