Pimpri: The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has announced plans to transform the old Pune-Mumbai highway from Harris Bridge in Dapodi to Bhakti-Shakti Chowk in Nigdi under an "Urban Street Design" project.

This initiative aims to create uniform footpaths, enhance beautification, and improve pedestrian and cycling facilities, all while preserving the existing road width and trees.

Project Phases

  • First Phase: The stretch from Harris Bridge to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Statue Chowk in Pimpri will be developed on both sides of the service roads.

  • Second Phase: The stretch from Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Statue Chowk to Bhakti-Shakti Chowk in Nigdi will be developed subsequently.

  • The construction and electrical departments will work jointly to complete the project seamlessly.

Fifteen years after the construction of a 12.5-kilometer grade separator along the Dapodi-Nigdi route, PCMC has allocated ₹170 crore for the development of footpaths, cycle tracks, and beautification.

The aim is to provide a pleasant commuting experience for pedestrians and motorists alike.

Key Features

  • Cycle Tracks: Red-marked lanes will encourage cycling and provide a dedicated path for cyclists.

  • Beautification: The route will be adorned with murals and artistic designs.

  • Fitness Infrastructure: Fitness equipment will be installed along the footpaths.

  • LED Streetlights: Uniformly designed LED streetlights will be installed for consistent lighting.

Traffic Concerns

The Dapodi-Nigdi eight-lane road was initially built between 2004 and 2008 amid public opposition regarding its necessity. Currently, the road supports BRT services, and ongoing Metro and Urban Street Design projects have reduced its width, intensifying traffic congestion.

PCMC has assured that every junction along the route will have pedestrian crossing facilities, while the cycle tracks and beautified footpaths are expected to encourage sustainable modes of transportation.

Chief Engineer Pramod Ombhase stated, "Uniform footpaths and beautification will enhance the aesthetics of the road, while the dedicated cycle tracks and fitness installations will promote health and sustainable mobility."
