Pune Metro achieved a significant milestone on January 1, 2025, with a record-breaking 2,04,957 passengers traveling across its two operational routes—Pimpri to Swargate (Purple Line) and Vanaz to Ramwadi (Aqua Line). This marked the first time the metro surpassed the two-lakh passenger count in a single day.

The Pimpri-Swargate route recorded 1,02,783 passengers, surpassing the 1,02,174 commuters on the Vanaz-Ramwadi route. Notably, this was the first instance where the Pimpri-Swargate line saw a higher passenger count than the Vanaz-Ramwadi line.

Pune’s metro system, spanning 33 kilometers and comprising 30 stations, has seen steadily increasing ridership. The Purple Line covers 17.5 kilometers with 14 stations, while the Aqua Line extends 14.5 kilometers with 16 stations.

New Year’s Day drew large crowds to Pune’s historic and religious sites, including the Dagdusheth Ganpati temple and the Koregaon Bhima Vijay Stambh. Many devotees and visitors opted for the metro, significantly boosting its ridership.

Previously, the metro’s highest single-day ridership was recorded on June 30, 2024, during the Sant Tukaram and Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj palkhi processions, with 1,99,437 passengers. The January 1, 2025, record reflects the growing popularity and efficiency of Pune Metro as a preferred mode of transport.

Passenger numbers for recent days highlight the upward trend:

  • December 30, 2024: 1,46,537 (64,397 on Purple Line, 82,140 on Aqua Line)

  • December 31, 2024: 1,45,973 (65,585 on Purple Line, 80,388 on Aqua Line)

  • January 1, 2025: 2,04,957 (1,02,783 on Purple Line, 1,02,174 on Aqua Line)
