Upon his arrival, he was greeted by the Oman Deputy Prime Minister for Defence Affairs with much fanfare, including a traditional dance and a guard of honour. However, what caught the attention of social media was a small, shiny earring on his left ear, leading to widespread speculation about whether it was a new fashion statement by PM Modi.
Although Prime Minister Modi is often occupied with national affairs, he is also recognized for his keen interest in fashion. His sharp, tailored suits and vibrant colors at formal occasions frequently draw attention, such as the bandhgala suit famously embroidered with his name.
On this occasion, the 'earring' worn by PM Modi was more than just a fashion statement. Upon closer inspection, it was identified as a real-time translation device. These devices are frequently employed in high-level diplomatic meetings to ensure seamless communication.
Prime Minister Modi donned the device while greeting Oman's Deputy Prime Minister, Sayyid Shihab bin Tariq Al Said, at the airport. Arabic is the official language of Oman, a country in the Gulf region. The Prime Minister's trip to Oman was a crucial event as India aims to strengthen its relationship with the Gulf country.
While visiting Oman, Prime Minister Modi finalized a free trade agreement (FTA) that will allow approximately 98% of Indian exports to enter duty-free. Conversely, India will lower tariffs on Omani goods like dates and marbles.
Notably, prior to his departure for India, PM Modi was awarded the Order of Oman, a civilian honor of the Gulf nation, by Sultan Haitham bin Tarik in recognition of his "outstanding contribution" to the relations between India and Oman.
"PM Modi tweeted that this represents a sign of love and trust between the citizens of India and Oman.
