Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Lek Ladki scheme, launched in 2014-15 to support the upbringing of girls from economically weaker sections, is facing dwindling participation despite its benefits. In the financial year 2023-24, only ₹8.4 lakh of the allocated ₹25 lakh was utilized, benefitting just 41 girls. This is a stark contrast to the approximately 24,200 girls born annually in the city, indicating a significant gap in awareness and outreach.

The scheme was designed to ease the financial burden of raising daughters. Key provisions include:

• One Girl Child: PMC deposits ₹40,000, and parents contribute ₹10,000 in a joint account for 18 years.

• Two Girl Children: PMC deposits ₹20,000 per child, with an additional ₹10,000 from parents.

• At maturity, parents can withdraw over ₹1.5 lakh for the child’s welfare.

Declining Participation Over the Years

When launched, the scheme was allocated ₹5 crore and received a strong initial response. However, participation has steadily declined, prompting the PMC to reduce the budget to ₹25 lakh by 2023-24. The pandemic also adversely affected participation, with only six applications received in 2021-22.

Initially, the deposited funds were kept in nationalized banks. However, declining interest rates led to a shift to the Kisan Vikas Patra (KVP) under the Post Office, ensuring better returns. The deposited amount remains inaccessible until the girl turns 18.

Eligibility Criteria

To benefit from the Lek Ladki scheme, families must meet the following conditions:

• Residency within PMC limits for at least three years.

• Annual income not exceeding ₹1 lakh, with proof required.

• Application must be submitted within one year of the child’s birth.

Speaking with mediapersons, Deputy Commissioner Nitin Udas stated, “The PMC promotes this scheme through advertisements. Citizens meeting the eligibility criteria are encouraged to apply online to secure benefits. We urge families to take advantage of this initiative to support their daughters’ future.”
