Pune, 27 August 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to provide housing facilities to transgender security guards working under its security wing. Many guards have been struggling to find homes due to social stigma, prompting PMC commissioner Naval Kishore Ram to intervene and ensure housing support through PMC’s available housing stock.

PMC had introduced transgender security guards two years ago on a contractual basis to promote inclusivity and dignity in the workplace. While they are respected within the civic body, many face challenges outside when landlords refuse to rent houses to them. To address this, PMC will allot them housing just as it does for permanent security staff.

Alongside this move, PMC also plans to recruit 25 more transgender guards. The civic body is preparing to strengthen its overall security setup by providing guards with modern weapons, improving technical systems, and appointing retired army personnel. Civic gardens, theatres, and other important premises will be brought under stricter security cover.

According to officials, PMC requires an additional 650 security guards and will soon take decisions to meet this demand.
