PMC Pushes for Road Widening on Defense Land to Ease Traffic in Pune

Key connecting roads fall within defense land, making expansion difficult without approval. These roads are currently open to the public, but their widening is essential.

Pune: In a bid to ease traffic congestion, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is making a renewed effort to widen key roads that pass through defense land in the eastern part of the city. A revised proposal is set to be submitted to the defense department, and if approved, it could significantly improve traffic flow in affected areas.

With Pune’s rapid urbanization, daily traffic congestion has become a major concern, particularly in the central parts of the city. While vehicle numbers continue to increase rapidly, many roads remain narrow, leading to severe bottlenecks.

To address this, PMC has already initiated road-widening projects in several areas. However, key connecting roads fall within defense land, making expansion difficult without approval. These roads are currently open to the public, but their widening is essential as per the city's development plan.

PMC and traffic police surveyed the affected routes and had previously requested land acquisition from the defense department for the expansion of the following roads:

  • North Main Road (Kalyani Nagar Bridge to Pingale Vasti)

  • Golibar Maidan to Kondhwa

  • Lullanagar Road (Gangadham Chowk area)

  • Ghorpadi Road to Bhairobanala Road

  • Bhairobanala to Netaji Nagar Road

However, no substantial progress was made following this request.

Joint Meeting of Departments for Resolution

To break the deadlock, a joint meeting was convened at the Divisional Commissioner’s office, bringing together officials from:

  • Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)

  • Public Works Department (PWD)

  • Defense Department

  • Police Administration

  • Cantonment Board

During the meeting, the Divisional Commissioner directed all departments to collaborate and take a unified decision to address Pune’s pressing traffic issues. Further, PMC was instructed to submit a revised proposal for the required land, taking into account the defense department’s recommendations.
