PMC Stop-Work Orders for 91 Construction Sites Remain Unenforced, No Follow-Up Inspections

Developers have neither provided written responses nor implemented corrective measures. PMC has also not revoked the restrictions imposed on these sites.

Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) had issued stop-work orders two weeks ago to 91 construction projects for violating air pollution control regulations. However, none of the developers have responded with explanations or measures taken to mitigate pollution, and no follow-up inspections have been conducted by PMC officials, raising questions about the effectiveness of the action.

Dust Pollution from Construction Sites Ignored

The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has outlined strict regulations for controlling dust pollution at construction sites, which developers are legally obligated to follow. However, these rules are being blatantly ignored across Pune, particularly in areas like Kothrud, Baner, Balewadi, Warje Malwadi, and Hadapsar, among others. The lack of adherence has worsened air pollution in the city, leading to an increase in respiratory, cardiovascular, and eye-related health issues among residents.

PMC's Initial Action and Developer Negligence

City Engineer Prashant Waghmare had directed all construction violating MPCB guidelines to halt operations, and stop-work orders were issued to 91 projects within two days. Despite this, developers have neither provided written responses nor implemented corrective measures. PMC has also not revoked the restrictions imposed on these sites.

PMC Promises Follow-Up Inspections

Superintending Engineer Shridhar Yewalekar stated that inspections would soon commence to verify compliance with the orders. “If construction is found to be continuing despite the orders, criminal charges will be filed against the violators. Projects adhering to the MPCB’s pollution control guidelines will be allowed to resume operations,” he added.
