Pune: In an effort to provide Pune residents with direct access to organic vegetables and fruits from farmers, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), in collaboration with the World Bank and the state government, is set to launch four weekly farmers' markets in the city.

These markets will be located in designated amenity spaces at Lohegaon, Baner, Pashan, Bavdhan, and Balewadi. The initiative is expected to be operational within the next two months, according to PMC Additional Commissioner Prithviraj B.P.

This initiative is part of the Sant Shiromani Savata Mali Rayat Bazaar Initiative, which is being implemented with financial assistance from the World Bank under the Balasaheb Thackeray Agribusiness and Rural Transformation Project (SMART).

The objective is to enhance the quality of weekly farmers' markets while ensuring urban consumers receive fresh, pesticide-free produce at fair prices. Simultaneously, it will help farmers secure better returns for their crops and reduce traffic congestion caused by informal roadside vendors.

According to Additional Commissioner Prithviraj B.P., community-based organizations and farmer-producer companies selected by the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) will be given the opportunity to sell their produce at these markets. The initiative aims to promote a sustainable food supply system by creating a direct link between farmers and consumers.

The weekly markets will also contribute to improving the nutritional standards of city residents by offering fresh, clean, and high-quality farm products, including fruits, vegetables, and meats. With better infrastructure and government backing, these markets will serve as an essential step toward a healthier and more sustainable urban food ecosystem.
