Pune: The Maharashtra government has taken a significant step to preserve Pune’s cultural heritage by declaring the Holkar Chhatri and Mahadev Temple in Khadki as state-protected monuments. The Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs issued a government resolution formalizing the decision.

Historical Significance

Situated along the banks of the Mula River in the Khadki Cantonment Board area, the Holkar Chhatri is a historic structure associated with the Maratha Empire's Holkar dynasty. The site, which includes two memorials and a Mahadev temple, belongs to the Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Charities Trust based in Indore.

The Chhatri and the temple are noted for their 18th-century Maratha-style architecture, including a fortified structure and a temple spire that showcase traditional craftsmanship.

The state government has completed the necessary procedures to designate the Holkar Chhatri and Mahadev Temple as state-protected monuments. A draft notification in English and Marathi has been prepared and will be published in Part 4 of the state gazette. The Directorate of Archaeology and Museums has been instructed to display the notification at prominent locations near the monument.

Cultural and Architectural Importance

Located near the iconic Holkar Bridge, the site also features a stone ghat built along the riverbank, enhancing its historical and architectural significance. Declaring the Holkar Chhatri as a state-protected monument is expected to further bolster its preservation and bring attention to Pune’s rich heritage.
