Pune: A case highlighting the impact of marital disputes on children came to light in Pune when a 21-year-old met his father for the first time during his parents’ divorce proceedings.

Pramila and Pushkar (names changed), who married in May 2002, have been estranged for two decades. Shortly after their son, Prashant, was born in 2003, the couple separated due to irreconcilable differences. Pushkar never visited Pramila or their son, and Prashant grew up without knowing his father.

For the past 21 years, there was no communication between the couple, except during legal proceedings. Pushkar failed to provide court-ordered maintenance and withdrew his petition for reconciliation. Pramila repeatedly sought educational documents for Prashant but received no response from Pushkar.

Recently, when Prashant needed a caste certificate for higher education, Pramila, through her lawyer, Advocate Anagha Kale, issued a notice to Pushkar requesting the document. Pushkar agreed but demanded a divorce as a condition. The couple mutually filed for divorce and resolved to end their relationship legally.

During the divorce proceedings, Prashant, accompanying his mother, saw his father for the first time in court. The divorce is expected to be finalized in January 2025. Meanwhile, Prashant has obtained the necessary documents, enabling him to continue his education without further obstacles.
