IMD has issued a yellow alert for Pune and nearby ghats from mid-week, with rains expected to pick up around Ganesh Chaturthi.
Low-pressure systems across Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, and the Bay of Bengal are driving widespread rainfall in Maharashtra and Gujarat.
Pune city saw only light rain on Sunday, while ghat areas like Tamhini and Lonavla received heavier showers.
Pune, 25 August 2025: After a brief lull, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Pune and surrounding areas, warning of increased rainfall from Wednesday, coinciding with Ganesh Chaturthi. No alerts have been announced for the first two days of the week.
The alert also covers the ghat sections of Satara, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Kolhapur, where heavy showers are likely in the coming days. Weather officials said that several active systems are driving the renewed spell of rain, including a low-pressure area over northeast Madhya Pradesh, a cyclonic circulation over Punjab, and another likely to form over the Bay of Bengal off the Odisha–West Bengal coast.
According to IMD, these systems will bring heavy to very heavy rainfall over Konkan and Goa between August 25 and 30, while Madhya Maharashtra will see scattered showers on August 24 and again from August 27 to 30. Gujarat is also expected to receive widespread heavy rainfall through the week.
Meanwhile, the ghats around Pune already witnessed significant showers between Saturday night and Sunday morning. Tamhini recorded 45mm rainfall, followed by Shirgaon (35mm), Ambone (30mm), and Lonavla (40mm). Other areas, including Bhira, Bhivpuri, Dawdi, and Thakurwadi, saw moderate showers.
Pune city itself received only light rainfall, with Lavale reporting 5mm, Lohegaon 3.5mm, and Shivajinagar and Chinchwad just 3mm each. The catchment areas supplying water to the city also saw modest rain, Temghar (14mm), Varasgaon (21mm), Panshet (16mm), and Khadakwasla only 2mm.
For Monday, IMD has predicted a generally cloudy sky with very light to light rain across Pune district.
