Pune, 30 August 2025: Pune district is set to begin a new project aimed at reducing river pollution by scientifically treating small rivers, streams, and drains that flow into major rivers. The initiative was announced by Union Minister of State Muralidhar Mohol during a District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) meeting on Friday.
The joint action plan will be prepared soon with participation from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), and the Zilla Parishad.
The meeting was also attended by Minister of State for Urban Development Madhuri Misal, MP Shrirang Barne, MLAs Bapusaheb Pathare and Babaji Kale, District Collector Jitendra Dudi, PCMC Commissioner Shekhar Singh, and Zilla Parishad CEO Gajanan Patil.
Mohol said Pune, despite being a hub for industry, education, and IT, continues to face serious problems from untreated sewage and industrial waste entering rivers. He stressed that cleaning only the main rivers will not solve the issue and that smaller tributaries and drains must also be treated.
Alongside river cleaning, the Pune Zilla Parishad will launch fresh projects under the Swachh Bharat Mission. These will focus on waste management, sewage treatment, and sanitation, with the aim of improving environmental balance and supporting sustainable development across the district.
