According to police, the incident took place late on July 27 when Devidas took the mobile phone of one of the accused, Gajanan Rathod (32), which led to a heated dispute. In a fit of rage, Gajanan and his associate Maharudra Shivaji Gavte (27) allegedly beat Devidas with fists and kicks until he collapsed. All three worked for a private engineering company and shared accommodation in Dhayari.

After the assault, the two accused fled the spot, leaving Devidas seriously injured. A police constable from Nanded City Police Station, Shivaji Kshirsagar, rushed him to a hospital upon receiving the information. However, Devidas was declared dead before treatment could begin.
