Pune Fire Brigade launches a firecracker safety campaign after rising Diwali fire incidents.
All 23 stations on high alert; personnel leaves cancelled, control rooms 24x7.
Citizens urged to celebrate safely, use eco-friendly crackers, and call 101 for emergencies
Pune, 18 October 2025: With Diwali approaching, the Pune Fire Brigade has launched a “Firecracker Safety Awareness Campaign” to prevent fire-related accidents caused during the festive season. Data from the past four years shows a sharp rise in incidents, from 21 in 2021 to 60 in 2024.
Under the leadership of Chief Fire Officer Devendra Potphode, the program aims to inform the public about fire safety and promote safe celebrations. All 23 fire stations in Pune have been instructed to stay alert, with the central control room functioning around the clock to swiftly handle any emergencies.
Fire officials have also strengthened safety measures around firecracker stalls and increased patrolling in busy market areas. Messages promoting safety and environmental responsibility are being circulated among residents through social media and local outreach.
Potphode stressed the importance of celebrating Diwali with happiness while being extremely cautious and mindful. He advised that adults should oversee children, opt for eco-friendly fireworks, and have water or sand on hand to manage small fires. He further mentioned that any fire or emergency situation should be promptly reported by dialing 101.
In order to guarantee a swift response during the holiday season, the fire department has revoked all staff leave and established special patrol units near key firecracker sales locations. Additionally, vendors have been directed to store firecrackers securely, maintain fire extinguishers on site, and only conduct sales after securing the required permissions from the fire department.
The department has appealed to citizens to celebrate responsibly, avoid storing firecrackers at home or in vehicles, and maintain cleanliness after bursting crackers. “A safe Diwali is our shared responsibility,” Potphode noted.
