Pune: In the aftermath of a tragic accident at a glass factory in Yewalewadi area, the factory owner and five others have been charged with culpable homicide after four workers were killed while unloading heavy glass sheets.

The incident occurred on Sunday (September 29) afternoon at India Glass Solutions, a factory that supplies glass for construction projects across Pune.

The factory owner, Hussain Tayyab Ali Pithawala (38), along with contractor Suresh alias Baban Dadu Chavan, truck owner Sanjay Dhula Hirwe (34), truck driver Raju Dashrath Rasge (30), and two others, were named in the complaint filed at Kondhwa Police Station. They face charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder under the Indian Penal Code.

According to the police, a truck carrying large, heavy glass sheets arrived at the factory on Sunday. While the workers were in the process of unloading the glass, a strap holding the glass pieces snapped, causing over two tons of glass to fall onto the workers.

The impact was fatal for four laborers—Amit Shivshankar Kumar (27), Vikas Sarju Prasad Gautam (23), Dharmendra Satyapal Kumar (40), and Pawan Ramchandra Kumar (44). Two other workers were seriously injured in the incident and remain hospitalized.

Dnyanand Gnyandev Rokde (36), one of the injured and a factory worker, filed the complaint leading to the charges. Investigations revealed that no safety equipment or procedures were in place for handling such heavy loads, leading to accusations of gross negligence on the part of the factory management.
