On the Swargate–Katraj metro corridor, two additional stations, Balajinagar and Bibwewadi, have been sanctioned. The cabinet also cleared the relocation of the Katraj metro station, which will now come up about 421 meters south of its earlier proposed site.

The Swargate–Katraj stretch had received central government approval in August 2024, followed by a virtual groundbreaking ceremony on September 29, 2024. Initially, five stations were planned on the line. However, growing demands from citizens and local representatives led to today’s approval of two more stops, ensuring wider coverage in densely populated areas.

In another key decision, the cabinet sanctioned budgetary provisions for the third and fourth suburban rail tracks between Pune and Lonavala. Modelled on Mumbai’s suburban transport system, the state government will share the financial responsibility to implement the project. The move is expected to ease congestion on the busy Pune–Mumbai corridor and provide relief to daily commuters.

With these approvals, Pune’s metro and suburban rail network is set to expand significantly, promising smoother and faster travel for thousands of passengers in the coming years.
