According to police, Gautam had gone aside briefly while his friends stayed near the fort. When he did not return, his slippers were later found near the cliff, prompting his friends to lodge a missing complaint. For the next three days, heavy rain and dense fog hampered search operations by police, forest officials, disaster response teams, and local villagers.

On Sunday evening, around 7 pm, tourists heard Gautam shouting for help behind the memorial of Narveer Tanaji Malusare on the fort. They immediately informed local residents, who rushed to the spot, brought him down, and handed him over to medical authorities.

Police said Gautam was extremely weak, shivering from the cold, and bore signs of bruises. He was taken to Khanapur in an ambulance and later admitted to a private hospital in Pune, where he is under treatment.

The joint search had involved nearly 70 people over the past three days. Local villagers expressed relief that Gautam was found alive after such an extended disappearance.
