Shop shutter and gate broken; valuables inside raise security concerns.
PMC officials promise stricter precautions for future drives.
Pune, 24 September2025: A jewellery shop in Manik Bagh suffered damage during an anti-encroachment drive carried out by Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Sinhagad Road regional office. A JCB, clearing unauthorized constructions, accidentally hit the shutter of the adjacent Sarafi shop, causing it to break. The shop houses valuables worth several lakhs, raising security concerns.
The incident occurred while PMC officials were acting against encroachments near Adarsh Apartment. The affected shop, Shaurya Jewellers, was closed at the time. Narayan Shahane, the shop owner, rushed to the site after learning about the damage, but the PMC team had already left.
Shahane said, “Even though my shop had no encroachment, the JCB damaged it. Since the shop contains expensive jewellery, this is a serious security concern. I have shared the CCTV footage with PMC, and they assured me appropriate action will be taken.”
PMC Deputy Commissioner of Encroachment, Sandeep Khalate, stated that the Sinhagad Road regional office carried out the drive and that the matter will be investigated. Assistant Commissioner Pragya Pawar added, “This incident was unfortunate. We will ensure no property is damaged during future operations.”
