Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided not to increase property tax for the financial year 2025-26. This marks the ninth consecutive year that property tax rates have remained unchanged. The decision was approved in the Standing Committee meeting held today under the leadership of Administrator and PMC Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale.

Despite mounting expenses and increasing financial responsibilities, the municipal body has opted to maintain the current tax structure, ensuring that residents do not face an additional financial burden.

For the ongoing financial year 2024-25, PMC had set a revenue target of ₹2,727 crore for property tax collections. So far, ₹2,010 crore has been collected, leaving an outstanding ₹700 crore to be recovered in the remaining two months of the fiscal year. With growing expenditures, revenue generation remains a key challenge for the administration.

The municipal administration has been working on the budget preparations for 2025-26, with various departments submitting funding requirements for their respective projects. However, in line with its policy, PMC had to finalize a decision on property tax revisions before February 20. The property tax department proposed maintaining the current tax rates, and the Standing Committee approved the recommendation today (February 6).

With PMC currently under an administrator, major policy decisions are subject to limitations. The absence of an elected municipal body has played a role in the decision to keep property tax unchanged.

PMC last increased property tax in 2016-17, implementing a 16% hike. The decision faced strong opposition, leading to protests and public demonstrations. Despite the pushback, the tax hike remained in place. In the following years, the administration proposed annual tax increases, but these were consistently rejected by the Standing Committee.
