Around 750 Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) staff, including senior officials, faced action for repeatedly reporting late to work.
Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram ordered the gates closed at 9:45 am and had names of latecomers recorded on Friday.
Despite earlier warnings, officers continued to arrive late, prompting strict action and notices.
Pune, 23 August 2025: In a strong disciplinary move, Pune Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram has taken action against nearly 750 municipal employees for habitual late-coming. The crackdown took place on Friday morning when the official office start time of 9:45 am was strictly enforced.
On his orders, all entry gates of the PMC headquarters and ward offices were closed after the scheduled time. Employees who arrived late were stopped at the gates, their names recorded, and immediately issued show-cause notices. The action also included six department heads along with other senior officials.
This decision followed repeated complaints that many officers and staff arrive well past the official start time, sometimes as late as noon, and also leave work early, causing disruption in administration. Earlier this month, employees were warned to follow timings, but the situation did not improve, leading to Friday’s sudden inspection.
Pune Municipal Corporation employees currently enjoy a five-day working week, with Saturdays off. To balance this, work hours have been extended on weekdays. However, despite this concession, punctuality remains a serious issue.
Deputy Commissioner of General Administration, Prasad Katkar, explained: Employees are expected to report by 9:45 am. Those who failed to follow this rule were served show-cause notices. The action was taken under direct instructions from the Commissioner and includes officials at all levels.
