Pune, 6th June 2025: In a major infrastructural development, the Mumbai-Pune Expressway is set to undergo a significant expansion to meet the growing traffic demands. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has announced plans to widen the existing 6-lane expressway to 10 lanes, with an estimated project cost of ₹14,900 crore.

Currently, the expressway handles approximately 65,000 vehicles on weekdays and sees a surge to over 1 lakh vehicles during weekends. With traffic growing at a rate of 5–6% annually, the expansion aims to enhance travel efficiency and reduce congestion, especially during peak hours and holiday seasons.

The project will be executed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, which is expected to ensure faster completion and improved management through private sector participation. Authorities have assured that minimal land acquisition will be needed for the expansion, as the MSRDC already possesses most of the land adjacent to the existing route.

Once completed, the expanded expressway is expected to cut down travel time between Mumbai and Pune considerably, providing a smoother and faster traveling experience. The project also promises to deliver a substantial economic impact by strengthening regional connectivity, supporting logistics, and commercial growth in the surrounding areas.

The expansion will not only benefit daily commuters but also enhance transport efficiency for goods and services between the two major cities. With improved road infrastructure, the government aims to keep pace with Maharashtra's evolving mobility needs and reinforce its status as an economic powerhouse.
