A prisoner at Yerawada Jail in Pune was attacked with a nail during a fight over sleeping arrangements.
Two undertrial inmates assaulted him, leaving him seriously injured.
Police have registered a case, and further investigation is underway.
Pune, 10 September 2025: A violent clash broke out inside Yerawada Central Jail on Sunday night after a dispute over sleeping space. During the altercation, two undertrial prisoners allegedly attacked another inmate with a nail, leaving him injured.
The victim has been identified as 52-year-old Sanjay Bhikaji Kapade, who is currently undergoing treatment at the jail hospital. According to a complaint filed by senior jail officer Revannath Kande, the accused, Bharat Vishal Rathod and Mohammad Gulab Shaikh, carried out the attack inside Barrack No. 6 around 8:30 pm.
Police said the two accused are in judicial custody and awaiting trial. A minor argument over sleeping arrangements reportedly escalated, leading the duo to strike Kapade on the neck with a nail and punch him in the chest, causing serious injuries.
Jail guards quickly intervened and brought the situation under control. Kapade was rushed for medical care, while senior police officers, including Inspector Ravindra Shelke, visited the spot. Yerawada Police have registered a case, and Assistant Inspector Vishal Takle is leading the investigation.
