Pune: On New Year’s Eve, the Pune Police launched an extensive campaign to curb traffic violations and ensure public safety. As part of the operation, action was taken against 85 individuals for drunk driving, and a total of 2,633 motorists were penalized for various traffic violations, resulting in the collection of fines amounting to ₹20 lakh.

The traffic police had set up 27 checkpoints across the city to monitor violations, particularly focusing on drunk driving, overspeeding, and triple-riding on two-wheelers. Officers were stationed at key junctions and conducted rigorous checks throughout the night.

Details of Violations and Penalties

• Drunk Driving: 85 motorists were booked for driving under the influence of alcohol.

• Overspeeding and Reckless Driving: 56 cases were filed against individuals for dangerous driving practices.

• Triple-Riding: 176 two-wheeler riders were fined for carrying more than two passengers.

• Using Mobile Phones While Driving: 49 motorists were penalized for using mobile phones while operating vehicles.

• Traffic Obstruction: 902 individuals were fined for parking vehicles in ways that obstructed the flow of traffic.

Other Violations:

• 23 cases of not wearing helmets.

• 118 cases of signal jumping.

• 632 cases of driving in the wrong direction.

• 23 cases of driving without a valid license.

In total, fines amounting to ₹19,81,450 were imposed on offenders, according to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Amol Zende.

Heavy Police Deployment

To ensure safety during New Year’s celebrations, Pune deployed 3,000 police personnel, including 800 traffic police officers. Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar confirmed that the city remained peaceful, with no major incidents reported. The strict enforcement of traffic rules contributed to maintaining order on the roads.
