Over 1,530 cheques worth ₹29.3 crore submitted for property tax payments in Pune during FY 2025–26 bounced due to insufficient funds.
PMC has recovered ₹15.28 crore from 882 property owners after issuing notices and SMS alerts.
640 property owners still owe ₹14.02 crore, including fines and interest, and have been urged to make immediate payment.
Pune, 25 July 2025: In a major setback to revenue collection, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) reported that 1,530 cheques submitted by citizens for property tax payments bounced during the current financial year (2025–26). These dishonoured cheques amount to a staggering ₹29.30 crore.
While citizens can pay property tax via cash, online platforms, RTGS, or cheque, there has been a rise in cheque-based payments in recent years, especially for large tax amounts. However, a significant number of these cheques were returned by banks due to insufficient funds in the issuers' accounts.
In response, the PMC’s Property Tax Assessment and Collection Department issued formal notices and sent SMS alerts to the concerned property owners. Following this, 882 individuals responded by clearing their dues, paying both the original tax amount and the penalty, contributing a total of ₹15.28 crore.
Despite repeated communication, 640 property owners have still not settled their dues. According to the PMC, ₹14.02 crore remains pending, which includes the original tax amount, cheque bounce penalty, and applicable interest for delayed payment.
Deputy Commissioner Avinash Sapkale of the Property Tax Department emphasized that citizens whose cheques have bounced have been informed through official notices and mobile alerts. He stated that the PMC will continue efforts to recover the outstanding dues and has warned that interest will be levied if payments are delayed further.
The PMC has set a property tax revenue target of ₹3,250 crore for FY 2025–26. In the first two and a half months alone, the department has already collected ₹1,500 crore. Sapkale expressed confidence that the remaining target will be met through ongoing recovery efforts.
