Pune, 20 August 2025: Pune witnessed chaos after heavy rains flooded several areas of the city, with Ekta Nagar on Sinhgad Road among the worst affected. Backwater from a stream entered multiple housing societies, submerging roads and ground floors. Residents spent a tense night as water levels continued to rise.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and fire brigade teams rushed to the spot, deploying pumps to drain water and starting evacuation. Many residents have been shifted to nearby schools and community halls. “Water has already reached our building’s basement, and the situation is getting worse. We need urgent help,” said a resident.
The crisis deepened after the release of additional water from Khadakwasla dam into the Mutha river. Officials confirmed that discharge had been raised to over 39,000 cusecs on Sunday morning, further increasing the risk of flooding in low-lying areas.
PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram visited the site late at night and appealed for calm. He said the administration was closely monitoring the situation and prioritising the safety of citizens. Authorities have asked people living near the river to move to safer places and avoid venturing onto waterlogged roads.
The weather department has predicted more rain in the next 24 hours, prompting Pune’s disaster management teams to stay on high alert. Residents have also demanded long-term solutions, including better drainage and stream cleaning, to prevent such flooding every monsoon.
