Pune, 28 July 2025: Pune is witnessing heavy rainfall, especially in the dam catchment areas, prompting officials to increase the water discharge from Khadakwasla Dam. The release, currently flowing at 18,000 cusecs, is set to be raised to 22,121 cusecs at 8 AM, marking the highest outflow of this monsoon season.

This increased discharge is flowing into the Mutha River, leading to the submergence of multiple bridges and forcing the closure of roads passing through the riverbed. Authorities have issued safety warnings to residents, especially those living near the riverbanks.

Officials from the Pune irrigation department confirmed that discharge from Varasgaon Dam has also been increased to 9,074 cusecs. Citizens have been strictly advised to stay out of the river area. “People should not enter the riverbed for their safety,” said Mohan Bhadane, Sub-Divisional Engineer, Mutha Canal Irrigation Division, Pune.

Rainfall continues to lash Pune and many other parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Satara, Sangli, Beed, Akola, Jalna, Yavatmal, Hingoli, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The ongoing downpour has disrupted daily life, with many areas reporting waterlogging and traffic chaos.

In view of the continuing rain, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow and orange alerts for several regions, especially the Konkan coast, Pune's ghats, and Vidarbha. Residents across affected areas are urged to remain cautious and follow updates from local authorities.
