Pune, 26 August 2025: Continuous rainfall has pushed the water levels in the Khadakwasla project’s dam chain to near full capacity, prompting authorities to increase water discharge. At the same time, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Pune later this week, warning of heavy showers coinciding with Ganesh Chaturthi.
On Monday evening, water release from the Khadakwasla dam was steadily increased. By 10 pm, 8,517 cusecs were discharged into the Mutha river. The Varasgaon dam began releasing over 4,200 cusecs into the Mose river from Monday night, while Panshet dam is scheduled to release around 2,300 cusecs into the Ambi river from midnight.
Officials have urged citizens living near riverbanks and streams to remain alert, as water outflow may rise further if rains continue. Local administration has appealed to residents in low-lying areas to take extra precautions.
As of August 25, the combined storage of the Khadakwasla project had reached 28.27 TMC, or 96.98% of total capacity, almost the same as last year at this time. Varasgaon and Panshet are both holding over 97% capacity, while Temghar is completely full. Khadakwasla dam itself is at 75%.
Meanwhile, weather conditions are expected to intensify. After a brief lull, Pune is forecast to see widespread rainfall from Wednesday onwards. IMD has warned of heavy showers in Pune city as well as ghat regions, especially during Ganesh Chaturthi festivities. Light rainfall will continue in the first two days of the week before conditions worsen mid-week.
