Pune: Pune and its neighboring areas are witnessing a significant dip in temperatures, with the city recording its lowest temperature of the season on December 16. The chill in the air has intensified after a brief respite due to Cyclone Fengal.
The winter season began in earnest after Diwali, with daytime and nighttime temperatures steadily declining. Single-digit minimum temperatures were recorded in several areas, including the National Defence Academy (NDA) and Shivajinagar, where the mercury dropped to 8°C and 9°C, respectively on Sunday (December 15).
Coldest Day of the Season
As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), NDA reported the lowest temperature on Monday (December 16) at 6.1°C. Other recorded temperatures included Shivajinagar at 7.8°C, Lohegaon at 12°C, Koregaon Park at 13.1°C, and Chinchwad at 14.5°C.
Impact of Cyclone Fengal
Earlier, the cold wave was interrupted by Cyclone Fengal, which increased atmospheric moisture and caused a rise in temperatures. This led to unseasonal warmth despite the winter season. With the cyclone’s influence waning, Pune has once again started experiencing colder conditions.
Senior meteorologist Manikrao Khule noted that a cold wave-like situation is prevailing across the state, with single-digit temperatures reported in many areas. He added that the current chilly weather is likely to continue for a few more days.
